Former Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane, a Democrat who worked on Hillary Clinton’s presidential campaign in 2008, is now heading to prison after being convicted on nine felony counts.
The Political Insider reported that Kane leaked grand jury secrets in an attempt to discredit a political rival that she thought was responsible for a negative newspaper article about her.
According to Morning Call, Kane will be in jail for up to two years, and then on probation for much of the next decade.
“This case is about ego, ego of a politician consumed with her image from Day One,” Judge Wendy Demchick-Alloy said during Kane’s sentencing on Monday in Montgomery County Court. “And instead of focusing solely on the business of fighting crime, her focus was on defeating these perceived enemies.”
Demchick-Alloy said that though Kane rose quickly through the ranks to become the state’s top law enforcement officer as a political novice, she didn’t make the transition from politician to public servant.
Not only did she campaign for Hillary in 2008, but Bill Clinton gave Kane an endorsement in 2012.
Kane was seen as a possible Senate contender for 2016, with a WikiLeaks entry showing that the Pennsylvania senate seat was considered the 4th most important race in 2016. The Clinton campaign can be seen saying that Kane’s charges were not “huge news” because “these problems have been going on for a while now.”
It looks like Kane fit in quite well with Hillary Clinton’s campaign, since it’s full of criminals as well!
