Three days after Donald Trump won the presidential election, a Muslim student at the University of Michigan made headlines when she claimed a white man attacked her and told her that if she did not remove her hijab, he would set her on fire. The story was later proven to be a lie, and now the Muslim student has learned her fate.

The Blaze reported that the Washtenaw County prosecutor’s office “declined to authorize criminal charges” against the student.

This came after the student claimed she was the victim of a hate crime on November 11. She described her attacker as white and 20 to 30 years old, average height, athletic build, bad body odor, unkempt appearance and intoxicated with slurred speech. The attack was cited all over the country as evidence that Trump’s win was causing hate crimes against Muslims to spread like wildfire.

However, after the Ann Arbor Police Department teamed up with the FBI to investigate, they quickly discovered the story was a lie.

“Investigators conducted witness interviews and reviewed multiple surveillance videos of the area in question,” the updated report read. “During the course of the investigation, numerous inconsistencies in the statements provided by the alleged victim were identified. Following a thorough investigation, detectives have determined the incident in question did not occur.”

Once the woman was exposed as a liar, police officers demanded that she be charged with filing a false police report.

“Sending it to the prosecutor’s office is standard procedure when the investigation has revealed the incident as reported was false, and the person who reported knows it’s false,” Ann Arbor Police Detective Lt. Matthew Lige said.
