Since Donald Trump beat Hillary Clinton in the presidential election, German Chancellor Angela Merkel has been hailed as the new leader of global liberal democracy. That’s why it should come as no surprise that Barack Obama rushed to her side on Wednesday night for a meeting in Germany, presumably to strategize for the next four years.
Yahoo News reported that Obama claims to be visiting Germany simply to thank Merkel for her friendship during his two terms. However, the two just wrote a joint article for business magazine Wirtschaftswoche in which they called for ongoing cooperation on the basis of shared principles to fight climate change, ensure collective defense within NATO, and promote free trade.
“These values of democracy, justice and freedom form the foundation of our successful economies,” they wrote.
“We owe it to our industries and our peoples — indeed, to the global community — to broaden and deepen our cooperation,” they said, taking a clear shot at Trump’s “America First” slogan.
Experts say this meeting is likely a passing of the torch from Obama to Merkel, who the American president has called “probably… my closest international partner.”
It’s sad that Obama is blatantly conspiring against the president-elect with our international allies. What do you think about this meeting? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section.
