The Denver Sherriff’s Department does not have job requirements like you would see elsewhere. Candidates were being disqualified previously if they were not a citizen of the US.
Most people thought this was fair, as they thought an American should protect and serve our country.
They were recently hit by a $10,000 fine by the Department of Justice under Obama for apparently purposefully discriminating against job seekers.
The Denver Sheriff’s Department said it was an accident. They didn’t mean to ‘discriminate’ but felt that hiring US citizens was the right thing to do.
Then they issued the following statement:
“The Denver Sheriff Department maintains its commitment to treat all people with dignity and respect, and is proud to have one of the most diverse workplaces in Colorado,” said Denver Sheriff’s Department spokesperson Simon Crittle. “While we didn’t commit this violation intentionally, we accept responsibility and are taking steps to clarify policy and amend language in hiring documents.”
