Texas Republican Gov. Greg Abbott called on a Democratic Party official in his state to step down from office following his “disgusting” racial slur regarding GOP Sen. Tim Scott.
“This is disgusting, hateful, and completely unacceptable. O’Connor must apologize to @SenatorTimScott & step down immediately,” Abbott tweeted Saturday. “@texasdemocrats censure him.”

He was responding to a since-deleted Facebook post from Lamar County Democratic Party chairman Gary O’Connor that called Scott an “oreo” following his Republican rebuttal to Joe Biden’s address to Congress.
“Oreo” refers to a black person who is perceived as acting like a white person.
“I had hoped that Scott might show some common sense, but it seems clear he is little more than an oreo with no real principles,” the post read.
O’Connor has faced calls from other Texas political leaders to step down, including Republican Rep. Pat Fallon.
“Gary O’Connor’s comment against Senator Tim Scott is abhorrent, insulting, and unforgivable. Both he and the entire Lamar County Democratic Party should be ashamed of this racist behavior,” Fallon said.
“This kind of behavior is not tolerable in Texas, the United States, or any political party,” he added.
The comment comes after the slur “Uncle Tim” trended on Twitter to disparage Scott.
Twitter banned the phrase from appearing in its trending section, but the tweets containing the offensive term were not removed and remain live on the platform.
Scott was praised for his impressive speech on Wednesday night, where he spoke about unity, finding common ground about race, and how he did not think America is a racist country.
Scott said that he himself knows the “pain of discrimination,” having been “pulled over for no reason” and “followed around a store.”
He also added: “I’ve also experienced a different kind of intolerance. I get called ‘Uncle Tom’ and the N-word by progressives, by liberals. Just last week, a national newspaper suggested my family’s poverty was actually a privilege because a relative owned land generations before my time.”
“It is stunning in 2021 that those who speak about ending discrimination want to end it by more discrimination,” Scott said.

“I’ll just tell you that it has been an amazing morning with so many good people calling. But the Left, they have doubled down. They are not going to attack my policies, but they are literally attacking my skin color. You cannot step out of your lane according to the liberal elite Left,” he said.
“Look at the COVID package. The COVID package itself discriminated against white farmers,” he continued. “We had the Pickford settlements in the early 90s so that black farmers would be treated fairly by the federal government, now we are going to reverse that and discriminate against white farmers.”
“Did we not learn the lesson the first time around? I’ll just tell you that it has been an amazing morning with so many good people calling. But the Left, they have doubled down. They are not going to attack my policies, but they are literally attacking my skin color. You cannot step out of your lane according to the liberal elite Left,” Scott said.
