Because of its lengthy border with Mexico, the state of Texas got the worst end of the deal when President Joe Biden, on his first day in office, reversed several of former President Donald Trump’s border security policies.

Throughout 2021, Texas has experienced several months where officials have had to deal with hundreds of thousands of illegal migrant crossings, taxing resources and inundating border communities. After pleading with Biden to do something, GOP Gov. Greg Abbott decided to act on his own.

USA Features News reported in September:

The Texas government is set to sign a contract with private firms to build hundreds of miles of wall along the state’s border with Mexico, continuing a federal project begun under former President Donald Trump.

The plan is to build an additional 700 miles of wall, according to a post on the website of the Texas Facilities Commission.

The agency announced that it had selected an engineering and design firm to oversee wall construction.

“Building the border barrier has begun,” Abbott announced in a tweet containing video of construction equipment clearing brush. “The 1st step is to get easements on land. The 2nd step is to clear the land for the building process. That is what is happening here. The Texas Facilities Commission is working to hire a program manager to oversee the entire process.

On Friday, Abbott took to Twitter again to declare that actual wall construction had begun.

“Texas has officially started building its own border wall. Biden allows open border policies and refuses to enforce laws passed by Congress to secure the border and enforce immigration laws,” the GOP governor wrote. “Texas is stepping up to do the federal government’s job.”

He included a tweet from Fox News correspondent Bill Melugin, who has spent months covering the border crisis for his network, who added more details.

Texas has officially started building its own border wall. The first wall panels have gone up in Starr County in the RGV. State land, state money. This particular contractor was building Trump’s wall until Biden cancelled them. Now they build for @GregAbbott_TX,” Melugin wrote.

In another update, Melugin noted that the Biden administration will not sell Texas the steel previously purchased to build the border wall under former President Trump.

“The federal government will not sell Texas the steel that was already bought and paid for President Trump’s wall. The metal continues to sit around, going to waste. TX is sourcing its own steel for its border wall,” he posted along with a video taken by fellow network correspondent Griff Jenkins, who said the Biden regime would rather taxpayers be out the money.

The Daily Wire added:

On Thursday, the Texas Military Department (TMD) and the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) held a briefing to update Texans on Operation Lone Star.

“Anyone attempting to enter Texas illegally by crossing these fences will be arrested for criminal trespassing,” DPS Director Steven McCraw said during the hearing. “Catch and release is not part of Operation Lone Star’s mission.”
