The 2020 election interference case against former President Donald Trump in Georgia took a major turn late this week, according to a Friday report.

The news comes after Trump declared ‘total exoneration’ following a grand jury report in the case was released earlier this year.

ABC News reported that, according to their lawyer, eight people in the state who were referred to as “fake electors” and who were allegedly involved in attempting to overturn the 2020 election results have accepted immunity in the Fulton County investigation.

The attorney, who represents ten of the fake electors, noted in a court filing on Friday that the Fulton County district attorney’s office offered immunity to eight of her clients in April, the report said.

“After reviewing the actual, written offers of immunity, each of those eight electors accepted their immunity offer,” said the filing by Kimberly Debrow, the attorney, Kimberly Debrow, according to ABC News.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis is investigating allegations that Trump attempted to overturn his loss in the 2020 election in Georgia following the earlier release of a phone call in January 2021 in which the then-president is heard talking with Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger to “find 11,780 votes,” the exact number needed to secure a win in the state.

ABC News added that the former House select committee investigating the Jan. 6 Capitol attack said the “fake elector” scheme, which members said involved electors in several states, put together “groups of individuals in key battleground states and got them to call themselves electors, created phony certificates associated with these fake electors, and then transmitted these certificates to Washington, and to the Congress, to be counted during the joint session of Congress on January 6th.”

ABC News reported that seven of the electors have had interviews with Willis and her office, adding that all 16 of the electors have been notified they are targets of her investigation.

The report added:

The new filing on Friday came after Willis earlier last month asked the judge to disqualify Debrow from simultaneously representing the electors. Willis claimed in her court filing that Debrow’s representation of multiple electors amounted to a conflict of interest, especially after some of the electors stated during interviews with the DA’s office that other electors had committed crimes.

Debrow, in her filing on Friday, denied that accusation.

“At no time during or after any of these interview did the DA election team state that they believed an elector was incriminating another jointly represented elector or that they believed a conflict of interest had arisen,” the filing stated.

Trump has repeatedly maintained that his phone call was proper and that he was not attempting to do anything illegal.

In February, Trump responded to the release of a report by a grand jury in Georgia that he said did not implicate him in any post-2020 election wrongdoing.

Writing on his Truth Social platform on Thursday following the release of the report, Trump said: “Thank you to the Special Grand Jury in the Great State of Georgia for your Patriotism & Courage. Total exoneration. The USA is very proud of you!!!”

In another ‘truth,’ he noted: “The long awaited important sections of the Georgia report, which do not even mention President Trump’s name, have nothing to do with the President because President Trump did absolutely nothing wrong. The President participated in two perfect phone calls regarding election integrity in Georgia, which he is entitled to do – in fact, as President, it was President Trump’s Constitutional duty to ensure election safety, security, and integrity…Between the two calls, there were many officials and attorneys on the line, including the Secretary of State of Georgia, and no one objected, even slightly protested, or hung up. President Trump will always keep fighting for true and honest elections in America!”

Willis, meanwhile, was “considering whether those who testified before the grand jury lied while under oath,” Newsmax reported at the time.

Willis, a member of the Democratic Party, has pursued an assertive strategy in the Trump investigation. She has issued subpoenas to some of Trump’s associates, such as Senator Lindsey Graham of South Carolina and former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows, while also litigating to force them to provide testimony, the report noted further.
