Charlie Kirk’s mother is publicly rejecting claims that her family has turned against widow Erika Kirk following his assassination.
Kathryn Kirk spoke with Vanity Fair after largely avoiding reporters during the year following her son’s September 2025 killing.
“Here’s the truth: We were 100% behind her,” Kathryn said while discussing Erika’s appointment to lead Turning Point USA.
Kathryn specifically rejected rumors that Charlie’s parents blamed Erika for his death or were fighting over his estate.
She also dismissed claims of a family battle over the future direction and leadership of Turning Point USA.
“Erika and I have, through the trauma, grown closer,” Kathryn said about their relationship after Charlie’s death.
“We knew Charlie in a way that no one else did,” Kathryn said while describing their shared grief.
Kathryn added that they can look into each other’s eyes and understand “the depth of our despair.”
Vanity Fair reported Kathryn became emotional while discussing attacks and speculation directed at Erika across social media.
Kathryn said Charlie would have been deeply upset by the online treatment his wife has received since his murder.
She acknowledged wanting to remain a private citizen even as her silence became ammunition for increasingly widespread conspiracy theories.
Those theories have included claims about Charlie’s will, Turning Point’s succession, family tensions and Erika’s alleged involvement in his death.
No evidence presented by prosecutors has implicated Erika in Charlie’s killing, and authorities have charged Tyler Robinson with the murder.
Robinson, 23, has pleaded not guilty to aggravated murder and six additional charges stemming from the September 10, 2025 shooting.
A Utah judge ruled prosecutors presented sufficient evidence for Robinson to stand trial, with the death penalty remaining available.
Robinson is scheduled to return October 23 for a pretrial conference where a trial date could be established.
Charlie had also been receiving mounting death threats, prompting discussions about additional security measures before his Utah appearance.
The night before his death, Charlie discussed bulletproof glass shields and protective vests with Erika and their pastor.
Kathryn said Charlie deliberately shielded his parents from those security discussions because they would intensify their existing fears.
Those concerns also prompted Turning Point officials to discuss what would happen if Charlie could no longer lead the organization.
Board members and close associates told Vanity Fair Charlie had explicitly said Erika should succeed him if something happened.
Turning Point’s board unanimously elected Erika CEO and chair eight days after Charlie’s death.
The organization said Charlie had “expressed to multiple executives that this is what he wanted” before his killing.
DeGroote said Erika’s appointment avoided a potentially lengthy outside search and training process for a replacement chief executive.
“She knew him more than anyone,” one former Turning Point employee said while discussing Erika’s selection.
Vice President JD Vance also defended Erika’s leadership ability during the Vanity Fair profile.
“We can never replace Charlie,” Vance said, while describing Erika as capable of preserving Kirk’s political organization and legacy.
Erika has meanwhile faced intense scrutiny from commentators questioning Turning Point’s future and circumstances surrounding Charlie’s assassination.
Vanity Fair identified former Kirk ally Candace Owens as a leading promoter of theories questioning Erika and the official account.
Owens has publicly argued Erika should face questioning, although prosecutors have not accused Erika of involvement in Charlie’s death.
Erika also described watching enhanced surveillance video of the shooting during Robinson’s preliminary hearing alongside Kathryn.
She said she gripped Kathryn’s arm and cried as the video showed the alleged shooter moving into position.
Erika additionally recalled insisting on seeing Charlie’s body despite a hospital doctor initially advising her against doing so.
Kathryn’s rare interview now directly challenges claims that Charlie’s parents oppose Erika personally or dispute her leadership of Turning Point.
