A group of staffers who work for CBS’s “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert” have been arrested by the U.S. Capitol Police and California Rep. Adam Schiff has some explaining to do.

The group were arrested on Thursday for unlawful entry as they entered the Capitol and were snooping around the offices of some Republican Congressmembers, CNN reported.

“On June 16, 2022, at approximately 8:30 p.m., U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) received a call for a disturbance in the Longworth House Office Building. Responding officers observed seven individuals, unescorted and without Congressional ID, in a sixth-floor hallway,” Capitol Police said.

“The building was closed to visitors, and these individuals were determined to be a part of a group that had been directed by the USCP to leave the building earlier in the day,” they said.

“This is an active criminal investigation, and may result in additional criminal charges after consultation with the U.S. Attorney,” they said.

CBS said that the staffers had approved interviews but stayed to do other comedy bits.

“On Wednesday, June 15 and Thursday, June 16, Triumph the Insult Comic Dog was on-site at the Capitol with a production team to record interviews for a comedy segment on behalf of ‘The Late Show.’ Their interviews at the Capitol were authorized and pre-arranged through Congressional aides of the members interviewed,” it said. “After leaving the members’ offices on their last interview of the day, the production team stayed to film stand-ups and other final comedy elements in the halls when they were detained by Capitol Police.”Fox News correspondent Chad Pergram tweeted about the incident.

“Fox confirms that group of persons associated with The Late Show Stephen Colbert were arrested last night and charged with illegal entry to House office buildings after hours,” he said.

“Fox is told the people were arrested in the Longworth House Office Building. The group was in the Cannon House Office Building earlier in the day trying to get interviews around the time of the 1/6 committee hearing.

“However, USCP shooed them away because they did not have proper press credentials,” the reporter said.

“However, the group surfaced later that night after the Capitol complex was closed to the public Fox is told they took pictures and video around the offices of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and Lauren Boebert (R-CO).

“They were unescorted and arrested and charged with illegal entry. They were arrested near Boebert’s office. They were released overnight,” he said.

“Fox has confirmed the arrests of these nine persons through a senior House source.  Jake Plunkett  Allison Martinez  Tyrone Dean Stephen Romond  Nicoletta Green Brendan Hurley  Robert Smigel  Josh Comers  David Feldman

“Robert Smigel is known for being the voice of Triumph the Insult Comic Dog. He also produced short cartoons for Saturday Night Live’s ‘TV Funhouse,” he said.

Fox News host Tucker Carlson accused Rep. Schiff of allowing the group into the Capitol and accused the group of insurrection.

“Last night, producers for Stephen Colbert’s CBS show committed insurrection at the United States Capitol, he said. “[Democratic U.S. Representative] Adam Schiff illegally gave producers from CBS access to the Capitol. And then the group… remained in the Longworth House Office Building after hours.”

“It is likely that some members of Stephen Colbert’s team will be held in solitary confinement for a year and half without being charged,” he said. “Because this is an insurrection. And actually, joking aside, how could they not be held? … The precedent is in place.”

“It’s exactly like what happened on January 6th,” he said. “So, we’ll take a close look at what the punishments are.”

And he was not the only person to compare the story to January 6, 2020.

“What did the J6 committee know and when did they know it about the Colbert insurrection at the Capitol?” Mollie Hemingway said.
