California Republican Rep. Devin Nunes announced that he is retiring from Congress and becoming the CEO of Donald Trump’s new social media company, and now Democrats have a chance to win a place in the House that they did not believe they had a chance to before.

Democrats had done extensive fundraising before in an attempt to defeat Rep. Nunes, but it did not work, The Sacramento Bee reported.

Democratic donors gave a lot of dough to underdog candidates vying to unseat Rep. Devin Nunes during the Trump administration. It didn’t work out for them.

Fresno prosecutor Andrew Janz hauled in $9 million for his 2018 run against Nunes and came within five percentage points. Phil Arballo followed in 2020, bringing in $5 million but falling by nine percentage points to the Republicans.

Suddenly, the math looks more favorable to Democrats trying to claim a seat in the San Joaquin Valley.

And it is one of the bright spots for Democrats heading into 2022 as the majority of predictions say that Republicans are likely to win the House in 2022.

Possible Republicans who could compete to take Rep. Nunes spot include Assemblyman Devon Mathis, State Sen. Andreas Borgeas, Fresno County Supervisor Steve Brandau, and Fresno City Councilman Garry Bredefeld.

For Democrats, one possible candidate, Sen. Melissa Hurtado, said she is being encouraged to the campaign.

The announcement of Rep. Nunes’ retirement and joining Trump’s company came on Monday.

Mr. Nunes is currently a sitting U.S. House Representative, representing California’s 22nd congressional district, and formerly the Chair of the House Intelligence Committee.
