The Department of Homeland Security has spent nearly $500,000 in taxpayer funds to surround one of President Joe Biden’s Delaware homes with a fence, even as he signed an executive order halting border wall construction after taking office and as the department itself ended all wall-building contracts earlier this month.
“The southern border with Mexico is seeing the highest levels of illegal border crossings in 35 years, but the Department of Homeland Security has found one access point it can shore up — doling out $455,000 to a Delaware construction company for a fence around President Biden’s ‘Summer White House,'” the New York Post reported Saturday.
“In September, the department awarded a contract of $456,548 to Turnstone Holdings LLC for ‘PURCHASE AND INSTALLATION OF SECURITY FENCING AT 32 FARVIEW, REHOBOTH DELAWARE,’ according to USAspending.gov, an online database tracking federal government spending,” the outlet continued.
The contract was opened Sept. 21 and it is expected to be closed Dec. 31. Fence construction at Biden’s property is scheduled to be concluded by the latter date.
The Post went on to report that for security reasons, the Secret Service, which is listed as the subagency in the contract, would not discuss “protective means and methods” with the outlet.
DHS announced earlier this month its intention to cancel “the remaining border barrier contracts located within US Border Patrol’s (USBP) Laredo Sector and all border barrier contracts located in the Rio Grande Valley Sector.”
News of the fence comes as Biden’s administration is dealing with historic levels of illegal immigration, in large part due to his reversal of his predecessor’s border enforcement policies, Republicans and other critics have charged.
“This week, data released by US Customs and Border Protection revealed that 1.7 million migrants have crossed the border in FY 2021, the highest number since 1986,” The Post reported.
Also this month, former Border Patrol chief Rodney Scott told Fox News that the Biden administration was paying wall contractors to remain idle, which was allegedly costing taxpayers millions per day.
Asked by anchor Bret Baier what type of actions President Joe Biden and his administration took regarding the border wall after taking power in January, Scott said the president issued a 60-day construction moratorium.
“We’re supposed to do an in-depth study and then come up with a plan going forward,” Scott said. “As Border Patrol did its part, everything, that was done within about two weeks, several briefings later, there really had not been any decisions made, it went well beyond the 60 days. Many of those projects today are just still on hold. So we’re paying contractors, for a while it was almost $5 million a day between DOD and DHS.”
Baier then interjected to ask: “Wait, $5 million a day to not build the wall?”
“To not build the wall,” Scott reiterated.
“There are stacks and stacks of border wall panels, there are hundreds of miles of fiber optic cabling, there’s hundreds of cameras that were being installed with that, that are just sitting, there’s no action being taken,” Scott added.
That prompted the Fox News anchor to ask: “So what do they say when the briefing is well, this really helps us, if we could just plug this in, if we could just finish this thing, what did they say?”
“We’re not building more wall. There’s no conversation,” Scott responded. “There’s no adult dialogue if you will. It’s just a black-and-white decision. The administration said we’re not doing it. So we’re not doing it. That money is just trickling away to those contractors for not doing work each day.”
Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., railed at Biden’s lack of border enforcement last week and said he should face impeachment over the issue.
“Here’s what I worry about: Terrorists getting in the middle of this group and killing a bunch of us. The incompetence in Afghanistan of turning Afghanistan over to the terrorists, the Taliban, will allow Al Qaeda and ISIS to roam freely and an open border is going to meet one day and some terrorist is going to take advantage of this system, come here and kill a bunch of us if we don’t change,” Graham said during an interview following a trip he made to the border.
“Joe Biden is criminally negligent. His administration, I think, is criminally negligent when it comes to controlling our border,” he continued.
