Elon Musk, who himself has become embroiled in a scandal he has dubbed “Elongate,” responded to the ‘Russiagate’ story that made headlines on Friday as a result of an ongoing federal trial.

The SpaceX, Tesla, and Starlink founder and CEO over the weekend called out a tweet by two-time presidential loser Hillary Clinton as a “hoax,” which she sent out shortly before the 2016 election.

“Computer scientists have apparently uncovered a covert server linking the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank,” Clinton wrote in the October 31, 2016, tweet, which contained a lengthy memo from one of her then-top aides, Jake Sullivan, now serving as President Joe Biden’s national security adviser.

Sullivan claimed: “This could be the most direct link yet between Donald Trump and Moscow. Computer scientists have apparently uncovered a covert server linking the Trump Organization to a Russian-based bank. This secret hotline may be the key to unlocking the mystery of Trump’s ties to Russia. It certainly seems the Trump Organization felt it had something to hide, given that it apparently took steps to conceal the link when it was discovered by journalists.”

On Friday evening, a Twitter user asked Musk if he planned to crack down on disinformation if his deal to purchase the platform goes through.

“@elonmusk I have reported this tweet as misleading disinformation to the powers that be at @twitter. I would be interested to know if, when you receive control over the company, anything was done with this at any level. Pls advise soonest,” the user wrote.

“You are absolutely correct. That tweet is a Clinton campaign hoax for which their campaign lawyer is undergoing a criminal trial,” Musk responded as he linked to a story from the BBC about the ongoing trial of Michael Sussmann, who served as an attorney for the Clinton campaign in 2016.

Sussmann has been accused by special counsel John Durham of lying to the FBI, telling then-general counsel James Baker he was not working on behalf of any clients when he passed along the fake claim about a link between Kremlin-aligned Alfa Bank and Trump’s company.

The Daily Wire adds:

During the trial last week, Clinton’s campaign manager testified that Clinton personally authorized her campaign to share computer data — which has since been debunked — that purportedly linked Trump with a Russian bank.

Robby Mook, her 2016 campaign manager who testified as a defense witness for Sussmann, said he spoke with Clinton about the supposed link, and said the discussion went like, “Hey, we have this and we want to share it with a reporter,” he said.

“She agreed,” Mook testified, indicating that Clinton herself personally signed off on spreading the false narrative.

Former President Donald Trump reacted on Saturday to Mook’s testimony, asking specifically how he was supposed to get his reputation back.

Trump said in an interview with Fox News Digital that the entire Russia investigation is “one of the greatest political scandals in history,” and that he likely will “never” get his “reputation fully back.”

“This is one of the greatest political scandals in history,” Trump told Fox News. “For three years, I had to fight her off, and fight those crooked people off, and you’ll never get your reputation fully back.”

“Where do I get my reputation back?” Trump reiterated.

“I had to fight them off,” Trump said. “And if we had real leadership, instead of people like Mitch McConnell, they would do something about it. And guys like Bill Barr. They would have done something about it.”

The former president also said that the law enforcement and intelligence resources used to investigate the phony allegation during the 2016 campaign distracted them from what “could have been a real danger with Russia.”
