Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has rejected a call by a member of the state’s congressional delegation to launch an investigation into Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis following damning accusations of improprieties during her prosecution of former President Donald Trump.
In a statement to Breitbart News, Kemp said the “complaint” by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) should be referred to the state’s oversight committee.
“Kemp’s failure to act means Willis will be able to continue interfering in the 2024 presidential election by prosecuting Trump,” Breitbart News stated.
“The Congresswoman has every right to refer her complaint to the oversight commission once the legislative process concludes this session and the commission begins full operations,” a Kemp spokesperson told Breitbart News. “Just last year, the Georgia General Assembly laid out a specific oversight process for district attorneys that is transparent and unbiased, which the governor supported and signed into law.”
Kemp, who was in Davos, Switzerland, earlier this week attending the World Economic Forum, previously said the allegations against Willis are “deeply troubling.”
“These allegations are deeply troubling and evidence should be presented quickly,” the spokesperson added. “Georgians must have confidence in our legal system and its procedures, and these allegations — in addition to the lack of direct response from District Attorney Willis — jeopardize that confidence.”
Greene filed a formal complaint with Kemp and the Republican attorney general, Chris Carr. Greene requested that they look into allegations of political bias on the part of Willis, a Democrat, regarding the payment of roughly $700,000 to her special prosecutor, Nathan Wade, with whom she has been accused of having a romantic relationship.
Greene went on to assert that if the allegations are accurate, it would reveal “Fani Willis’ serious lawlessness, including potential violation of public oath,” in addition to other laws of Georgia.
Republicans who are close to the former president say Kemp could act unilaterally if he wanted to.
“That’s bullshit,” Mike Davis, a Republican operative close to Trump’s world, told Breitbart. “He has statutory power right now to order a criminal investigation.”
Greene said that normally, the committee process would be fine, but she said time is of the essence since Willis is attempting to bring Trump to trial in months.
“Governor Kemp and our state Attorney General Chris Carr need to step in and do the job that they have the power to do, and that is to launch a criminal investigation into Willis and Nathan Wade,” Greene told Breitbart News.
“What I’m focused on is the fact that I believe our governor and our state attorney general should use their power,” she continued. “They have the power to go after a state district attorney who is abusing her power to go after the former president of the United States.”
“These people are being drained of money while they’re having to pay lawyers. They have incredible stress in their lives and their families’ lives,” she said, noting the others who have been charged by Willis in the same case. “This is affecting real people in Georgia.”
In her first statements after the revelations, Willis made subtle allusions to the claims, telling a church crowd on Martin Luther King Day is unreasonable to expect black women to be perfect, suggesting the allegations are racially motivated.
Regarding Greene, Willis said that her demeanor had become “filled with hate.”
“Dear God, I do not want to be like those that attacked me. I never want to be a Marjorie Taylor Greene who has never met me, but has allowed her spirit to be filled with hate,” she said. “How does this woman, who has the honor of being a leader in my state, how is it that she has not reached out to me?”
