Hungary warned that allowing Ukraine to employ long-range missiles provided by the US to launch attacks deep inside Russian territory might escalate the conflict to a global level and criticized the US decision on Monday.
In a Facebook message, Hungary’s Foreign Minister Peter Szijjarto called the White House’s support for Ukraine an “extremely dangerous” move that would escalate the crisis.
“Pro-war forces” in the United States, he said, are disregarding the will of the people, who want peace instead of more aggression.
“The pro-war mainstream has launched a final, desperate attack on the new reality,” he said, adding that the US decision could spark global conflict.
He criticized U.S. lawmakers for failing to recognize the growing desire for peace, calling the announcement “undemocratic.”
President Joe Biden gave his approval on Sunday for Ukraine to employ US-provided missiles to strike farther into Russian territory.
This decision comes as a sizable contingent of Ukrainian troops are already in Russia’s Kursk region after their invasions in the first week of August. According to US daily Politico, these troops are anticipated to encounter a massive onslaught by North Korean and Russian forces.
Many geopolitical analysts predict that US President-elect Donald Trump, who has previously criticized US military help to Kyiv, will change Washington’s policy toward Ukraine following his victory in the November 5 elections.
Nonetheless, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, the president of Ukraine, has voiced hope that Trump’s “peace through strength” strategy will end the war.
Zelenskyy has dismissed Hungary’s repeated calls for an early cease-fire in Ukraine, describing them as “nonsense.” Hungary has maintained connections with Moscow throughout the crisis.
Szijjarto referred to the dispute as “a tough battle” and reaffirmed the need to stop its escalation.
Despite the current conflict in Ukraine, Hungary is still one of the few EU nations with close relations with Russia.
Donald Trump Jr., the son of President-elect Donald Trump, has stated that the Biden administration’s recent help to Ukraine is a ploy to initiate “World War III.”
Donald Trump Jr. made these remarks after President Biden decided to give the Ukrainian military permission to employ long-range missiles provided by the United States to target Russia.
The controversial move from Biden comes just months before Trump’s second term in the White House.
Trump Jr. claimed in a tweet that the “military-industrial complex” is trying to create chaos in the ongoing war.
“The Military Industrial Complex seems to want to make sure they get World War 3 going before my father has a chance to create peace and save lives. Gotta lock in those $Trillions. Life be damned!!! Imbeciles!” he wrote on X.
An important part of the Trump campaign was his promise to end the war between Russia and Ukraine.
During his first presidential debate against Vice President Kamala Harris, he claimed he could end the war within 24 hours if he succeeded Joe Biden.
After his landslide victory in the elections over Harris, Trump took phone calls with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin.
“As President Trump has said on the campaign trail, he is the only person who can bring both sides together in order to negotiate peace and work towards ending the war and stopping the killing,” Trump’s communications director, Steven Cheung, told the New York Post.
In addition to being heavily involved in his father’s political campaign and activities, Donald Trump Jr., the eldest son of President-elect Trump and his first wife, Ivana Trump, is reportedly playing a significant role in the transition team, including assisting in the selection of Trump’s Cabinet nominees, according to the Post.
