The FBI has launched an investigation into a shooting incident that occurred last month at a home where the children of a former Army Green Beret who is running for Congress as a Republican in North Carolina often stay.

WBT News reported on Thursday that the home belongs to the parents of Pat Harrigan. His campaign manager told the Carolina Journal that the home is located in Hickory. He added that Harrigan’s children were in the home at the time and the bullet struck just feet from where they were sleeping.

Harrigan’s campaign also told Fox News Digital that the candidate often stays at the home as well, but was not there at the time the shot was fired.

The GOP candidate is running against Democratic state Sen. Jeff Jackson for a seat in North Carolina’s 14th District.

In a Thursday statement, Harrigan said his opponent’s party has adopted policies that have led to rampant inflation, “economic ruin and rampant crime — including political violence.”

“Jeff Jackson’s politics lead to rising inflation, economic ruin, & rampant crime–including political violence. My mission is a better economy, less inflation & safe streets. A bullet & death threats aren’t enough to knock this Green Beret off that mission,” he noted on Twitter.

Crime has been a fundamental piece of the Republican platform for years, particularly as Democrats have gotten behind such things as defund efforts and more regulation in use of force.

The report of the FBI getting involved in the investigation, which remains unsolved, comes from WBT News, reported Brett Jensen.

“The FBI is investigating a shooting at Republican congressional candidate Pat Harrigan’s home in October,” Jensen’s tweet read. The Carolina Journal subsequently updated the story noting that it was Harrigan’s parents’ house and that his kids were sleeping there that night. “His children were inside the house at the time & feet from the shooting.”

Republican National Committee Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel ripped into the mainstream media for largely skipping the story.

“@PatHarriganNC wears a bulletproof vest to events, received death threats, and now his home was shot at after his opponent filmed an ad outside his home. A bullet landed feet away from his sleeping kids. Why is the media barely covering this?” she tweeted.

Fox News Digital noted:

After the tweet, Jackson’s campaign pulled a political ad from WCCB-TV and other local stations. The ad featured Harrigan’s own house and not the home of his parents where the shooting occurred, his campaign said.

“We fully support law enforcement as they investigate this incident and believe any wrongdoing should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law,” Campaign Spokesperson Tommy Cromie said in a statement to WCCB-TV. “We at Team Jackson pulled our ad in an abundance of caution and concern, but to be clear, the home involved in the incident has never been featured in any of our advertising.”

Fox News Digital added: “The shooting comes amid heightened concerns for the security of politicians. The Department of Homeland Security and other law enforcement agencies, including the FBI, issued an intelligence bulletin on Friday warning that political candidates, election officials and the public faced a heightened risk of violence.”

During a prime-time speech last week, President Joe Biden demonized his GOP opponents using disparaging language.

“The extreme MAGA element of the Republican Party, which is a minority [of] that party as I said earlier, but is its driving force, is trying to succeed where they failed in 2020, to suppress the right of voters and subvert the electoral system itself,” Biden said, without evidence. “That means denying your right to vote and deciding whether your vote even counts.”

“Instead of waiting until the election is over, they’re starting well before it,” Biden added. “They’re starting now. They’ve emboldened violence and intimidation of voters and Election Officials. It’s estimated that there are more than 300 election deniers on the ballot all across America this year. We can’t ignore the impact this is having on our country. It’s damaging, it’s corrosive, and it’s destructive. And I want to be very clear, this is not about me. It’s about all of us.”
