Now that everyone has dropped out of the race, former Vice President Joe Biden is the presumptive Democratic nominee.
Last week, former President Barack Obama finally came forward and endorsed Biden’s presidential campaign.
Biden will now need to pick a running mate and stunned a lot of people this week when he mentioned former First Lady Michelle Obama.
During an interview with CBS Pittsburgh, Biden said he would undoubtedly select Michelle Obama to be his running mate, though he admitted she likely does not want to jump back into politics anytime soon.
“I’d take her in a heartbeat,” Biden said when asked if he would add Obama to the ticket. “She’s brilliant. She knows the way around. She is a really fine woman. The Obamas are great friends.”
However, he said he doubts she wants the job.
“I don’t think she has any desire to live near the White House again,” Biden said.
In the same interview, Biden reiterated his pledge to select a woman as his running mate and said the vetting process is still ongoing.
“I’ll commit to that [it will] be a woman because it is very important that my administration look like the public, look like the nation,” he said. “And there will be, committed that there will be a woman of color on the Supreme Court, that doesn’t mean there won’t be a vice president, as well.”
This certainly caught a lot of people off guard and gained serious attention online.
Question for my political analyst colleagues: If Michelle Obama had wanted it, Dem nomination was hers for the asking. She decided not to run. Why, then, would she agree to run as second-fiddle to Biden, whom Obamas may like personally but obviously have misgivings about?

Biden has been floating a lot of names around lately, perhaps looking to see how the public reacts to them.
During an online campaign event last week, Sleepy Joe said he’s coming for California Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris.
Biden said: “I’m so lucky to have you be a part of this partnership going forward. Working together, we can make a great deal of progress. … I’m coming for you, kid.”
Biden mentioning her name comes after a report last month that Biden has shifted into general election mode and promised to select a woman as his vice-presidential running mate.
The previous report listed these 3 names, among others, are likely at the top of Biden’s shortlist:
- California Democratic Sen. Kamala Harris
- Massachusetts Democratic Sen. Elizabeth Warren
- Minnesota Democratic Sen. Amy Klobuchar
During the Democratic primary debate last month, Biden vowed that his eventual choice of a running mate would be a woman.
After vowing to nominate a black woman to the Supreme Court, Biden then added: “Secondly, if I’m elected president, my Cabinet, my administration will look like the country, and I commit that I will, in fact, appoint a woman to be vice president. There are a number of women qualified to be president tomorrow. I would pick a woman to be my vice president.”
