The federal judge designated to manage former FBI Director James Comey’s criminal prosecution is prepared to preside over what is anticipated to be one of the most scrutinized trials of President Donald Trump’s second term.
U.S. District Judge Michael Nachmanoff, a Biden appointment possessing a fourth-degree black belt in Shotokan Fudokan karate—a discipline prioritizing coolness under duress—will encounter significant public and political scrutiny as the hearings progress.
Colleagues and attorneys acquainted with Nachmanoff characterized him in interviews with CNN as a composed and methodical jurist, adept at handling the prominent nature of the Comey case and the attention it is expected to attract.
Judge Nachmanoff, who presides over the federal courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia, conducted Comey’s arraignment on Wednesday morning. The former FBI director, who has fallen from glory, was arrested last month on federal counts of providing false statements and obstructing a congressional action, arising from accusations of perjury during his 2020 testimony before Congress.
Comey entered a plea of not guilty.
Nachmanoff has established a reputation as a judicious and balanced jurist, earning significant respect among Virginia’s legal community, as reported by sources to CNN. Before his appointment to the federal district court, Nachmanoff held the position of magistrate judge at the same Alexandria courtroom.
Legal practitioners who have presented cases before Judge Michael Nachmanoff—whether with success or failure—characterized him as a jurist who maintains his personal opinions discreetly and is improbable to exacerbate tensions regarding the prosecution of Comey, a case that has already attracted considerable public and political scrutiny, CNN reported.
Kevin Carroll, a Virginia attorney, described him as an apolitical judge, referring to Judge Nachmanoff, from whom he sought an unsuccessful emergency court order earlier this year to temporarily reinstate his client, a CIA physician who claimed she was compelled to resign due to pressure from conservative officials, as reported by CNN.
“The judge has not incorporated politics in any manner,” Carroll stated. “It has solely involved legal discourse.”
Robert Jenkins, a white-collar defense attorney who has represented clients before Nachmanoff, stated that the judge “is dedicated to ensuring accuracy and the administration of justice.”
“Upon learning of the case assigned to him, I felt confident that if this prosecution is merely politically motivated, he will identify the appropriate course of action to ensure justice is upheld,” Jenkins remarked.
In contrast, Jenkins stated, “Should the allegations in the indictment possess any genuine validity, I believe he will act similarly, as he is equitable and dedicated to righteousness.”
A grand jury in Washington, D.C., a predominantly Democratic city, issued the indictment.
Nachmanoff was one of Biden’s initial judicial candidates, receiving bipartisan endorsement in the Senate. In 2021, he received confirmation for a lifetime appointment, with the support of three Republican senators with Democrats for his candidacy.
Since assuming the bench, Nachmanoff has upheld a comparatively subdued public presence while adjudicating numerous significant cases. Alongside supervising a lawsuit about a CIA physician who claimed she was compelled to resign, he adjudicated a 2024 jury trial resulting in the conviction of a former health care worker charged with unlawfully accessing the medical records of the late Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.
During the initial phase of his judicial career, while acting as a magistrate judge, Nachmanoff also assumed a secondary part in one of the significant legal narratives of former President Trump’s first term.
In 2019, he supervised the preliminary court proceedings for Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, aides of Trump friend Rudy Giuliani, who faced charges of campaign finance crimes. Nachmanoff mandated the release of both individuals on secured bonds amounting to $1 million, as reported by CNN.
