The walls are closing in on Fulton County, Georgia District Attorney Fani Willis after an alleged affair with a subordinate.
The judge on the case she brought against former President Donald Trump on election fraud charges has now ordered an investigation into her alleged misconduct, that she and her lead prosecutor engaged in an improper relationship and mishandled taxpayer dollars, The Washington Post reported.
Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee said that Willis has until Feb. 2. To respond to the accusations.
This could force the district attorney to have to address the issue in televised court proceedings which could derail her case against Trump and his codefendants and could do significant damage to her political career.
Willis has also filed a motion to block a subpoena that could have her testifying in the divorce case of the prosecutor she is alleged to have had an affair with, Nathan Wade.
On Sunday Willis appeared to address the issue in a speech she gave in a historically black church.
“God, why would you send this imperfect and very flawed person up to that position?” she said at the Big Bethel AME Church. “God, you did not tell me my home would be swept multiple times for bombs or that most days and nights that I would spend them in isolation because that was the safest place to be. You forgot to mention, Lord, that I would have to abandon my home. You forgot to mention the loneliness of this position. And you certainly didn’t tell me about the stress.”
She then appeared to play both the race and gender cards as if that was the reason she was facing scrutiny.
“I appointed three special counsel, which is my right to do. Paid them all the same hourly rate. They only attack one,” she said.
Georgia Republican Gov. Brian Kemp has rejected a call by a member of the state’s congressional delegation to launch an investigation into Willis following damning accusations of improprieties during her prosecution of Trump.
In a statement to Breitbart News, Kemp said the “complaint” by Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) should be referred to the state’s oversight committee.
“Kemp’s failure to act means Willis will be able to continue interfering in the 2024 presidential election by prosecuting Trump,” Breitbart News stated.
“The Congresswoman has every right to refer her complaint to the oversight commission once the legislative process concludes this session and the commission begins full operations,” a Kemp spokesperson told Breitbart News. “Just last year, the Georgia General Assembly laid out a specific oversight process for district attorneys that is transparent and unbiased, which the governor supported and signed into law.”
Kemp, who was in Davos, Switzerland, earlier this week attending the World Economic Forum, previously said the allegations against Willis are “deeply troubling.”
“These allegations are deeply troubling and evidence should be presented quickly,” the spokesperson added. “Georgians must have confidence in our legal system and its procedures, and these allegations — in addition to the lack of direct response from District Attorney Willis — jeopardize that confidence.”
Greene filed a formal complaint with Kemp and the Republican attorney general, Chris Carr. Greene requested that they look into allegations of political bias on the part of Willis, a Democrat, regarding the payment of roughly $700,000 to Wade, with whom she has been accused of having a romantic relationship.
Greene went on to assert that if the allegations are accurate, it would reveal “Fani Willis’ serious lawlessness, including potential violation of public oath,” in addition to other laws of Georgia.
Republicans who are close to the former president say Kemp could act unilaterally if he wanted to.
“That’s bullshit,” Mike Davis, a Republican operative close to Trump’s world, told Breitbart. “He has statutory power right now to order a criminal investigation.”
Greene said that normally, the committee process would be fine, but she said time is of the essence since Willis is attempting to bring Trump to trial in months.
