House Speaker Kevin McCarthy suggested that Attorney General Merrick Garland could be subjected to impeachment proceedings on Sunday.
The California Republican’s remarks came on the heels of bombshell whistleblower testimony last week from a pair of IRS agents who reportedly said that Garland’s Justice Department moved to impede their investigation into alleged tax crimes involving Hunter Biden.
“We need to get to the facts, and that includes reconciling these clear disparities. U.S. Attorney David Weiss must provide answers to the House Judiciary Committee,” McCarthy tweeted. “If the whistleblowers’ allegations are true, this will be a significant part of a larger impeachment inquiry into Merrick Garland’s weaponization of DOJ.”
McCarthy’s post was in response to a tweet from Washington Examiner columnist Byron York, who wrote: “IRS whistleblower Gary Shapley testified that US Atty in charge of Hunter investigation, David Weiss, said he wanted to bring charges in DC but was denied. Many of you balked. Didn’t happen! No way Shapley could know that!”
York’s post included a screenshot of a letter from a law firm corroborating Shapley’s account — that Weiss did request special counsel status but was denied.
Over the weekend, Garland claimed that Weiss never made any such request.

In addition, the IRS agents provided the House Oversight Committee with a threatening WhatsApp message Hunter Biden sent to a Chinese business partner in which he mentioned his father, then-former Vice President Joe Biden, being in the same room with him.
The message said: “I am sitting here with my father and we would like to understand why the commitment made has not been fulfilled. Tell the director that I would like to resolve this now before it gets out of hand, and now means tonight. And, Z, if I get a call or text from anyone involved in this other than you, Zhang, or the chairman, I will make certain that between the man sitting next to me, and every person he knows and my ability to forever hold a grudge that you will regret not following my direction. I am sitting here waiting for the call with my father.”
It’s not clear if Joe Biden actually was in the same room at the time, but it’s a question a growing number of Republicans want answered.
Sen. Ted Cruz suggested last week that House Republicans already have enough “direct evidence” of bribery and corruption involving Joe and Hunter Biden they should seriously consider impeachment proceedings against the president as well.
“Look, this WhatsApp is direct evidence of Joe Biden abusing his government power to enrich his son, and, assuming 10% for the big guy, to enrich himself,” Cruz said during his latest podcast, which is called “Verdict with Ted Cruz.”
“Remember, this WhatsApp says, ‘we want to know.’ This is not just me, Hunter, just mooching off my dad…. Of course, the House needs to investigate it, but the stunning thing is what the IRS whistleblower says is [Department of Justice], Merrick Garland prevented an investigation even into this message,” he added.
“This WhatsApp directly ties Joe Biden to the millions of dollars coming from communist China,” Cruz said. “Now, it is possible Hunter Biden was lying. It’s possible Joe Biden wasn’t next to him. It’s possible Joe Biden was not going to inflict official damage on the Chinese if they didn’t pay him and his son millions of dollars.
“That’s possible, but you know what? We don’t know if it’s true or not. Why? Because according to the whistleblower, they didn’t investigate, and they were prohibited from investigating. They were prevented from even asking the question,” he said.
