MSNBC host Jen Psaki faced immediate criticism after she appeared to call President Donald Trump a “predator” during a segment on The Briefing, before abruptly walking the comment back. While interviewing Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA) about the rehashed Jeffrey Epstein documents, Psaki said, “You’re talking about the other predators that are out there in addition to Trump,” before quickly stopping herself.
“Not that — I’m not saying he is. We don’t know all the details about that,” she added. “I just mean, in addition to what we’ve learned about Epstein and others, there are other predators out there.”
The exchange came as Democrats on the House Oversight Committee released tens of thousands of pages of previously unseen materials from Epstein’s personal files. The release included 2011 emails in which Epstein referenced Trump by name, telling Ghislaine Maxwell that “that dog that hasn’t barked is Trump” and that one victim, later identified as Virginia Giuffre, “spent hours at my house with him.”
The White House quickly condemned the coverage surrounding the emails, accusing House Democrats and left-leaning media outlets of attempting to smear Trump. Press secretary Karoline Leavitt said the document dump was “a deliberate distraction from the Democrats’ shutdown failure” and insisted that Giuffre “repeatedly said President Trump was not involved in any wrongdoing whatsoever and ‘couldn’t have been friendlier’ in their limited interactions.”
Leavitt added that Trump “kicked Jeffrey Epstein out of his club decades ago for being a creep to female employees, including Giuffre,” calling the latest reports “another dishonest attempt by Democrats and their media allies to revive a debunked smear.”
During her interview, Garcia accused Trump of “hiding” details related to Epstein’s trafficking network and protecting men who “raped girls and have faced no consequences.” He said the Justice Department and House Republicans were complicit in withholding key information from the public.
Republicans, meanwhile, blasted both Garcia’s comments and Psaki’s remarks, accusing Democrats of “weaponizing a tragedy” to score political points. House Oversight Republicans released a statement calling the leaks “carelessly selective” and said Democrats were intentionally omitting documents naming prominent Democratic figures tied to Epstein.

Psaki, who served as White House press secretary under former President Joe Biden, did not immediately respond to requests for comment. MSNBC also declined to issue a formal statement as of Thursday afternoon.
Psaki’s slip added to a pattern of controversies in her transition from political spokesperson to television host. Conservative critics have frequently accused her of using her MSNBC platform to amplify partisan narratives and downplay misconduct allegations involving Democratic figures. Her on-air moment, they said, underscored what they view as her bias and lack of restraint.
The Epstein document release has reopened long-dormant debates about media double standards in covering political scandals. The emails between Epstein and biographer Michael Wolff revealed that Wolff urged Epstein to attack Trump in 2016 to gain “political cover” amid mounting public backlash. Republicans have cited those emails as proof that media figures worked privately to shape anti-Trump narratives even as they claimed to pursue objective reporting.
Democrats, however, have maintained that the Oversight Committee’s goal is transparency. Garcia said the newly released documents prove the need for the Department of Justice to fully disclose all Epstein-related records, arguing, “The American people deserve to know the truth about who was involved and how deep this went.”
The House of Representatives is expected to consider a discharge petition in the coming weeks that would force a floor vote compelling the DOJ to release all Epstein files. Newly sworn-in Rep. Adelita Grijalva (D-AZ) is expected to give Democrats the final signature needed to trigger the vote.
