Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene had some unflattering words for Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis over the weekend in an interview following reports that she had an affair with a top prosecutor she hired to assist with her case against former President Donald Trump.
The Georgia Republican told Breitbart News that Willis should resign her post after admitting in court documents late last week she was romantically involved with the prosecutor, Nathan Hale. Willis went on to deny that the relationship had any effect on her or his prosecution of Trump’s case and more than a dozen others charged under state RICO violations related to the aftermath of the 2020 election.
Before Friday, Willis had neither confirmed nor denied the relationship.
“Absolutely, she should step down,” Greene told Breitbart News. “She should be absolutely ashamed of herself.”
Meanwhile, the judge on the case she brought against Trump, Fulton County Superior Court Judge Scott McAfee, has ordered an investigation into her alleged misconduct, alleging she engaged in an improper relationship and mishandled taxpayer dollars, The Washington Post reported.
“There’s so much evidence coming out. I would love to see a criminal investigation. That’s what should be happening here, in the state of Georgia, against Fani Willis,” Greene said. “That’s why I called for Gov. Kemp and Attorney General Chris Carr to launch a criminal investigation.”
“You had Nathan Wade having sex with Willis to get a contract with the Fulton County and be hired as a prosecutor, so he never registered as a lobbyist. He never filed any of that paperwork,” she said. “I filed an ethics violation against him because Willis admitted that they have a relationship that should move the investigation against Nathan Wade to a different level.”
Kemp rejected the call, however, and in a statement to Breitbart News, he said the “complaint” by Greene should be referred to the state’s oversight committee.
“Kemp’s failure to act means Willis will be able to continue interfering in the 2024 presidential election by prosecuting Trump,” Breitbart News stated.
“The Congresswoman has every right to refer her complaint to the oversight commission once the legislative process concludes this session and the commission begins full operations,” a Kemp spokesperson told Breitbart News. “Just last year, the Georgia General Assembly laid out a specific oversight process for district attorneys that is transparent and unbiased, which the governor supported and signed into law.”
Greene filed a formal complaint with Kemp and the Republican attorney general, Chris Carr. Greene requested that they look into allegations of political bias on the part of Willis, a Democrat, regarding the payment of roughly $700,000 to Wade, with whom she has been accused of having a romantic relationship.
Greene went on to assert that if the allegations are accurate, it would reveal “Fani Willis’ serious lawlessness, including potential violation of public oath,” in addition to other laws of Georgia.
Republicans who are close to the former president say Kemp could act unilaterally if he wanted to.
“That’s bullshit,” Mike Davis, a Republican operative close to Trump’s world, told Breitbart. “He has statutory power right now to order a criminal investigation.”
Greene said that normally, the committee process would be fine, but she said time is of the essence since Willis is attempting to bring Trump to trial in months.
Willis is facing the possibility of losing her reelection bid in 2024, as county voters have the opportunity to remove her from office amid allegations of corruption. Greene drew a parallel, suggesting that Willis might meet a fate similar to that of former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms, who lost her bid for reelection in 2022.
“Don’t count them out,” Greene said of Fulton County voters. “They got fed up with Keisha Lance Bottoms, the former mayor, sick of her, and you want to know why they got sick of her?” Greene asked. “They got sick and tired of her because she was against the police. And she was allowing this is back in 2020.”
