A major campaign appearance is taking shape in a state where one close race could determine Washington’s next balance of power.
It also places a nationally known figure beside a nominee whose primary victory exposed divisions within his party.
Former President Barack Obama will campaign with Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed at an October 24 rally in Detroit.
The event will also feature Jocelyn Benson, the Democratic nominee for governor, and other statewide candidates.
Obama’s appearance comes on the first day of Michigan’s required early in-person voting period.
Michigan Democrats announced the event Monday, leaving more than two weeks before Obama takes the stage.
The timing gives Democrats a prominent opening for their final campaign push in a contested Senate race.
El-Sayed faces Republican Mike Rogers for an open seat expected to influence which party controls the chamber.
The appearance marks a public show of support for a progressive nominee who narrowly defeated a more moderate rival.
El-Sayed beat Representative Haley Stevens by less than a percentage point in the August Democratic primary.
That contest became a test of competing directions for the party, according to the supplied report.
Stevens had the backing of Senate Democratic Leader Chuck Schumer during the nomination fight.

Some advertisements supporting Stevens also featured Obama praising her record, making his latest appearance politically notable.
Meanwhile, Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez supported El-Sayed in the primary.
Former Vice President Kamala Harris campaigned with him last month after the nomination was settled.
Obama spoke with El-Sayed by phone following the primary and is now planning to join him publicly.
For Democrats, the sequence shows prominent figures aligning behind their nominee after a divisive contest.
Whether that unity translates into votes is a separate question to be answered in November.
Detroit is a particularly important setting because Stevens outperformed El-Sayed in the surrounding Wayne County primary.
She won about 51 percent of the Democratic vote there, compared with approximately 45 percent for El-Sayed.
The county includes Detroit, where more than three-quarters of residents are Black.
A rally with Obama could help El-Sayed reach voters who preferred Stevens during the primary.
That is a campaign calculation, not evidence that those voters have changed their minds.
His appearance also invites questions about how El-Sayed’s priorities compare with Obama’s governing record.
Michigan Republicans have a candidate with a statewide contest of their own in Rogers.
El-Sayed and Rogers are scheduled to debate for the first time on October 8.
The debate should put their policy differences before voters well ahead of the October 24 rally.
Benson faces Republican Representative John James in the governor’s race.
Those candidates were scheduled for their first debate Tuesday, according to the report published Monday.
Michigan also has open races for secretary of state and attorney general this year.
Control of the state legislature is on the ballot as well, widening the stakes beyond Washington.
Obama’s visit is part of a larger increase in his campaign activity before the midterms.
He recorded two dozen advertisements last week for Democratic Senate and gubernatorial candidates.
Those advertisements are expected to appear during the closing weeks of the election.
The ads extend Obama’s campaign presence beyond the states where he appears in person.
Earlier, Obama appeared in an Iowa Senate advertisement and campaigned for Democratic candidates in Texas.
He is also scheduled to headline a Washington fundraiser supporting Senate Democrats this week.
The event includes a conversation with Delaware Senator Lisa Blunt Rochester.
Additional campaign stops are expected later in October, though the announced Michigan rally has a date.
Detroit is familiar campaign territory for Obama, who visited during the 2024 and 2022 election cycles.
In 2024, rapper Eminem introduced him at a Detroit rally, PBS reported.
This time, the central question is whether a former president can help consolidate support behind El-Sayed.
