AOC Says Cutting $1 Billion From NYPD Not Enough; ‘Defunding Police Means Defunding Police’

It’s almost like Democrats come up with the most outrageous policies and positions on purpose.

That’s the only way to describe why liberals are now backing the idea of defunding police departments and having literally no one to keep communities safe across the country following the death of George Floyd.

New York socialist Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is all-in on the “defund the police” movement.

Ocasio-Cortez released a statement in response to proposed New York City budget cuts to the police department, where she said the cuts do not go far enough and that “defunding police means defunding police.”

“Defunding police means defunding police. It does not mean budget tricks or funny math. It does not mean moving school police officers from the NYPD budget to the Department of Education’s budget so the exact same police remain in schools,” the congresswoman said in a statement.

“It does not mean counting overtime cuts as cuts, even as NYPD ignores every attempt by City Council to curb overtime spending and overspends on overtime anyways,” Ocasio-Cortez continued. “If these reports are accurate, then these proposed ‘cuts’ to the NYPD budget are a disingenuous illusion. This is not a victory. The fight to defund policing continues.”

The New York City Council and Mayor Bill de Blasio agreed to cut $1 billion from the NYPD’s $6 billion budget.

According to the Gotham Gazette report that Ocasio-Cortez was referring to, the agreement would reduce the number of officers in the city by canceling its July class of 1,163 cadets. It also includes $350 million in cuts to overtime pay and various other expenses such as travel enforcement and vehicle purchases.

“We’re acting on that call for justice. I believe it is our mission to redistribute resources to those who need them the most,” De Blasio said. “This is real redistribution.”

Ocasio-Cortez’s argument was that it doesn’t “count” if police departments lose funding over time.

Apparently, she just wants to abruptly cut all police departments immediately.

Although Democrats claim that they were inspired by the death of George Floyd — an African-American man who died in police custody in late May — to target police, it’s becoming more and more clear by the day that they have other ideas.

This certainly seems like liberals are trying to exploit Floyd’s death to push their far-left policies, which obviously includes shutting down law enforcement as much as possible.

In what world does it make sense to stop policing New York City, which is one of the most violent places on earth?

What does AOC and her liberal colleagues expect to happen if hundreds — or even thousands — of police officers are taken off the streets or not given the resources they need to keep communities safe?

Many find it mind-boggling that someone could look at arguably the most dangerous city in America and argue that the solution is to remove a major chunk of the police from it.

Just last month, three individuals in New York were arrested and charged after they tried to firebomb police cars.

Lawyers Urooj Rahman and Colinford Mattis have been accused of throwing a Molotov cocktail at a parked NYPD vehicle during the riots in late May in Brooklyn, New York City.

Samantha Shader, the third member of the group, is accused of targeting an NYPD vehicle occupied by four police officers with a Molotov cocktail.

Reports have suggested that all three could be eligible for life sentences if the government chooses to charge them to the fullest extent of the law.
