Officials with the Palm Beach Police Department said that officers detained four people who were reportedly involved with an “immigration incident” early Sunday morning.

An alert was shared on the department’s social media accounts around 7:45 a.m. EST Sunday. It reported that a “beached vessel” had been spotted earlier that morning near 1200 North Ocean Blvd., roughly six miles north of former President Donald Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate along Palm Beach, Newsweek reported.

Palm Beach police Captain Will Rothrock, the department’s public information officer, told Newsweek that the vessel was approximately 23 feet long. It likely came ashore between midnight and 5 a.m. and was found by police around 5:30 a.m.

The detained individuals found on the vessel include three females and one male. Two of the females were taken to the hospital as a precaution, Rothrock told Newsweek by phone.

Rothrock added that two of the detainees were Haitian nationals and the other two were Colombian. The Colombian nationals were also issued “notices to appear,” which is the official document from the Department of Homeland Security that begins removal proceedings against a foreign national, according to police.

Police said in the alert that there “may be several more subjects outstanding” than just the four people who were detained.

Newsweek added:

Immigration is a hot issue among voters heading into November amid an increase in border encounters. The administration of President Joe Biden has faced backlash from both sides of the aisle in recent weeks after issuing an executive order limiting the daily number of asylum-seekers crossing the U.S.-Mexico border to 2,500.

Trump, who is set to face off against Biden on Election Day, has made immigration police a core talking point in his 2024 campaign. Republicans have long accused Biden of having an “open-border policy” that has led to an increase in migration. Trump has promised to crack down on immigration if reelected to the White House, although his rhetoric around the issue has often drawn criticism.

Biden blamed Republicans for blocking a “bipartisan” border bill earlier this year. “Frankly, I would have preferred to address this issue through bipartisan legislation, because that’s the only way to actually get the kind of system we have now that’s broken, fixed. To hire more Border Patrol agents, more asylum officers, more judges. But, Republicans left me no choice,” he claimed.

But GOP lawmakers in the House said the measure would have done little to stop the massive numbers of people crossing illegally into the country. They also pointed out that Biden could have simply never reversed Trump’s strict enforcement policies on his first day in office or, at a minimum, reinstate them by the same executive authority Trump used to implement them in the first place. Finally, Republicans argue that the immigration system isn’t “broken,” but blamed Biden and his administration for refusing to enforce existing laws.

Even supporters of Biden blasted his latest executive order regarding the border. HBO’s “Real Time” host Bill Maher said during his program earlier this month that the order won’t really boost Biden’s reelection chances and is doomed to failure.

“I think if Biden loses this election, it’s gonna be because of two things,” Maher said. “He’s old, and he can’t get past that issue, and people just hate that about him. And immigration. I mean, just on a political level, I don’t think they could’ve handled it worse. Because now what’s going on … he’s finally, after saying he couldn’t do anything, he’s gonna issue an executive order. By the way, this is the same executive order Trump tried to get through the courts, and they didn’t let him do it.”

“But he’s gonna finally try it six months before the election, which says we’ll put a cap of 2,500 now asylum seekers coming in,” the comedian noted further. “If it passes 2,500, if it’s 2,501, then we automatically close the border. Fire marshal says, ‘No more.’ He’s gonna come here and close the club. And if you don’t have a stamp on your hand, you can’t get back in.”

“But when it goes down to 1,500, then we resume standard asylum procedures. It’s like surge pricing with Uber,” Maher quipped. “It’s a bizarre scheme that, of course, has pleased nobody. It looks like he did nothing, nothing, nothing, nothing. Of course, he did try through Congress, and the Republicans purposely spiked that football … but now it looks like this is his last minute before the election Hail Mary pass. And it’s not going to succeed.”
