A House Republican leader said last week he has been in contact with a whistleblower within Fani Willis’ office who plans to disclose allegations of the Fulton County, Ga. district attorney’s misuse of federal funds to target former President Donald Trump.
House Judiciary Committee Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) told Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo that a woman who used to work in Willis’ office has stepped forward and allegedly provided details to House Oversight Committee investigators claiming that Willis redirected federal anti-gang funds to target Trump.
Jordan’s remarks came just a day after the Justice Department revealed “inconsistencies” in the Georgia prosecutor’s reports to the federal government regarding the allocation of those funds.
“God bless the whistleblower [who] came forward,” Jordan said of the now-former employee, according to Newsweek. “We’ve talked with the whistleblower, she’s giving information to the press, to us. Now the Department of Justice is looking into this. All kinds of problems with Fani Willis and this ridiculous investigation she’s run on President Trump and others.”
Earlier this year, Jordan and the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee issued a subpoena to Willis’s office, seeking documents related to her office’s acquisition and utilization of federal funds. Willis has drawn scrutiny from Republicans following her involvement in a case alleging election interference against Trump and 18 co-defendants.
The presumed Republican presidential nominee faces accusations of conspiring to overturn Joe Biden’s 2020 election victory in Georgia. Trump has entered a plea of not guilty to all charges and has consistently claimed that the case is politically motivated.
“While you have indicated that additional documents may be forthcoming in response to the Committee’s subpoena, the Committee has yet to receive any additional responsive materials in the three weeks since your initial response,” Jordan said in a letter to Willis last month, requesting more information from her office by March 23.
“Accordingly, the Committee expects that you will produce all responsive documents to the subpoena in the categories prioritized by the Committee no later than 12:00 p.m. on March 28, 2024. If you fail to do so, the Committee will consider taking further action, such as the invocation of contempt of Congress proceedings,” the letter continued.
Meanwhile, Willis was warned this week that prosecutors in her office could face disciplinary actions, including jail time, over their courtroom behavior in the trial involving rapper Young Thug.
Newsweek reported that on Wednesday, Judge Ural Glanville, who presides over the case, warned some prosecutors from Willis’s office, saying, “None of you would do this if you were in the United States District Court, none of you.”
“My colleagues in federal court would probably jail most of you, and for those who have practiced in federal court, this is not the way it goes,” Glanville said. “From the state’s perspective as well as the defense perspective, everything’s filed in advance. So, why should you do anything less in this courtroom?”
Glanville’s warning followed a tense courtroom exchange between the judge and Assistant District Attorney Adriane Love during the trial. Glanville sided with the defense, ruling that certain evidence the prosecution sought to introduce would be excluded.
“Why didn’t we file this stuff months ago and let’s wind it out and air it out at that point in time,” Glanville told the defense before asking Love about the matter.
Love serves as the lead prosecutor in the RICO case against Jeffrey Williams, also known as Young Thug and 27 other defendants. The indictment, announced by Willis in May 2022, alleges Williams is the kingpin of Young Slime Life (YSL), an Atlanta-based street gang linked to the Bloods gang.
During Wednesday’s trial, Love engaged in an angry outburst over the judge’s ruling to exclude some evidence. The two were exchanging words in loud voices when Glanville said, “Have a seat, madam. Have a seat. You better exclude that, and next time, make sure you’re prepared.”
