Republican lawmakers are warning the Department of Homeland Security that President Joe Biden’s “reckless” policies relaxing deportations and border security enforcement will lead to new migrant caravans and a major resurgence of COVID-19.

“The Biden administration’s policies limiting immigration enforcement and weakening border security, coupled with its proposal to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants, are signaling to the world that our immigration laws can be violated with little, if any, consequence,” House Oversight Committee Ranking Member James Comer and 18 other Republicans on the panel wrote in a letter to DHS chief Alejandro Mayorkas, Fox News reported.

“We are particularly concerned that the Biden administration’s actions could soon lead to a health crisis at the border, and surrounding communities, causing widespread COVID-19 infections and fatalities,” the GOP lawmakers added.

Biden has signed a record number of executive orders in the four short weeks he’s been in office, including several that undid former President Donald Trump’s actions which included a “zero tolerance” policy and cooperative agreements with Mexico and Central American countries.

One of those agreements, the Migrant Protection Protocols, required migrants to remain in Mexico while awaiting their asylum hearings rather than in the U.S. as before; most migrants, by far, who were released into the interior during previous administrations never came showed up for asylum hearings.

In their letter, the GOP lawmakers also highlighted a November federal court injunction that prevented Title 42 expulsions, which allowed the swift return of illegal migrants for health reasons, from being applied to minors.

And they pointed to legislation Biden and congressional Democrats introduced this week that would provide a pathway to citizenship for untold millions of illegal aliens while repealing many asylum restrictions.

In addition to his reckless policies and executive actions, President Biden’s rhetoric relating to amnesty for millions of illegal aliens and gutting interior enforcement priorities is leading to a perfect storm on the southwest border,” the Oversight Republicans wrote. “Without a radically different approach, a health, security, and humanitarian crisis is inevitable.”

They went on to warn that the numbers of illegal migrants and unaccompanied children would “soon overwhelm border facilities in the middle of a global pandemic, forcing CBP officials to resort to widespread catch and release of unlawfully present individuals and families into the interior of the country.”

The GOP lawmakers specifically honed in on COVID-19.

“The increase in illegal immigration at the southern border presents a risk not only to Border Patrol agents apprehending migrants who illegally cross the border but also to those communities into which those individuals will relocate — likely leading to widespread COVID-19 infection and fatalities,” they wrote.

The news for Republicans seeking to fight back against Biden’s loosening of border controls hasn’t been all bad.

This week U.S. District Court Judge Drew Tipton extended a previous order blocking Biden’s 100-day deportation moratorium issued last month.

“The Court may ultimately be persuaded by the Defendants’ arguments, but any harm they might incur between now and then does not outweigh the potential for irreparable harm to Texas,” Tipton wrote.
