House Speaker and California Rep. Nancy Pelosi is showing her hypocrisy again and Republicans are vowing to make her pay for it.
The House Speaker imposed new rules after the Capitol riot that included a rule that said everyone had to walk through a metal detector before entering the Capitol, but she has apparently broken her own rule, according to Rep. Rodney Davis, Fox News reported.
“She opened the session on the floor, she came through what is known as the Speaker’s lobby,” he said. “We are all told, one Republican was fined for doing this just yesterday, that you cannot walk through those entrances unless you are disabled.”
He sent a letter to Pelosi asking her to address her actions and pay the fine that is supposed to be imposed.
“House Resolution 73 directs you in your capacity as Sergeant at Arms to impose fines against
members of the House who fail to complete security screening prior to entering the House
Chamber,” he said.
“The resolution, which went into effect upon passage of the House on February 2nd, imposes a
fine for $5,000 for the first offense. It also directs you to promptly notify in writing of fines
being imposed for violations of House Resolution 73. Yesterday, at approximately 9:59 am,
multiple members observed the Speaker of the House entering the House Chamber without
completing security screening.
“What was observed was a clear violation of House Resolution 73 and you are required by House
Rules to impose this fine. Please inform us once the fine has been assessed.
“We look forward to a prompt response to this inquiry,” he said.
If what Rep. Davis said is accurate then Pelosi is in violation the rule imposed by the House, which she oversees, Politico reported.
The deadly Jan. 6 Capitol insurrection is nearly a month past — but the aftershocks continue to ripple through the building long considered a safe haven for lawmakers and staff.
The House took an unprecedented step Tuesday night, voting to levy hefty fines against colleagues who bypass the recently installed metal detectors that surround the chamber. The reason is simple but speaks to the new reality: lawmakers are afraid of being injured, or worse, by colleagues trying to sneak weapons on to the House floor.
The fines — $5,000 for the first violation, $10,000 for any thereafter — are just the latest security measure to be implemented in an attempt to reassure members and their staff that the House is safe. But that remains an elusive goal, lawmakers said Tuesday as they returned to a Capitol still surrounded by concrete barricades and barbed wire.
“The security of the U.S. Capitol Complex and all who serve and work in it is of the highest priority,” Pelosi said of the measure. “Protecting the Capitol, which is the heart of our Democracy, is essential to upholding our Constitutional duty to serve those whom we are privileged to represent.”
Rules for thee and not for me has been a staple of Pelosi’s leadership and it appears to continue.
