Authorities in Beckham County played a key role in the search for Oklahoma Senate candidate Barry Christian, whose body was later found inside a vehicle in a remote area near Erick. The case began as a missing persons report out of Sayre, with the Sayre Police Department requesting assistance from the Beckham County Sheriff’s Office, Sheriff Derek Manning said, KECO reported.
“We received that report and were asked to help by pinging phones and sharing information through our app,” Manning said. “At that point, we had no solid leads.”
Christian, a Republican candidate for State Senate District 38, had reportedly missed a scheduled campaign meeting, prompting concern and the initial search effort.
Investigators began focusing on the possibility that Christian had traveled along Highway 30, south of Sayre, near the Sandy Sanders Wildlife Management Area, a rugged region locally known as “the breaks.”
A deputy searching the area encountered a hunter who reported seeing a vehicle deeper inside the wildlife area, providing a key lead in the search.
“Within a few minutes of entering the area, my deputy found the vehicle,” Manning said. “Inside was a deceased male, later identified as Mr. Christian.”
Officials said the terrain in the area is difficult to navigate, with limited road access and poor cell service that complicated communication during the search.
“It’s very easy to get lost down there,” Manning said. “There are no straight roads, and communication is unreliable.”
Once the vehicle and body were located, the case was turned over to the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation, which is now leading the investigation.
Manning said his department secured the scene and assisted as needed before stepping back as OSBI took control of the case.
“Our job was to secure the area and support OSBI,” he said. “From there, we follow their direction.”
Authorities remained on site until late that evening to ensure the scene was properly handled before transferring control.
Manning said the case has drawn significant attention due to Christian’s role as a political candidate, but emphasized the importance of allowing investigators to do their work.
“There are a lot of people involved and a lot of questions,” he said. “But it’s important to allow OSBI to conduct their investigation without interference.”
Officials have not released additional details about the circumstances surrounding Christian’s death, and the investigation remains ongoing.
Christian’s death comes amid a series of recent fatalities involving political figures across the United States, drawing broader attention despite officials emphasizing that the incidents are unrelated.
On April 25, Liz Conmy, a Democratic-NPL lawmaker from Fargo, died in a small plane crash shortly after takeoff from Crystal Airport near Minneapolis. Officials said the aircraft went down minutes after departure, killing both Conmy and the pilot, who was identified as her partner, Dr. Joseph Cass. Federal investigators are reviewing the crash, but early indications point to an accident, with no evidence of foul play.
Just days earlier, on April 22, longtime Congressman David Scott died at age 80. His office described the death as unexpected, though reports indicated it was likely due to natural causes. Scott had served in Congress for more than two decades and was actively campaigning for reelection at the time of his death.
Earlier this year, in January, Doug LaMalfa, a Republican lawmaker, died at age 65 following a reported medical emergency during surgery. That incident was also attributed to natural causes, according to initial reports.
Despite the timing of these deaths, officials have stressed that there is no known connection between the cases. Each incident is being handled independently by the relevant authorities, with separate investigations or medical reviews determining the causes.
Still, the close proximity of multiple deaths involving public officials has fueled speculation online and heightened public interest. Law enforcement agencies have urged caution, emphasizing the importance of relying on verified information as investigations proceed.
