A security alert erupted in Midtown Manhattan on Tuesday as scores of world leaders gathered nearby for one of the most closely guarded diplomatic events held annually in New York City.
Police rapidly sealed off several streets, summoned specialized units, and evacuated at least one building as authorities investigated an unattended item discovered only blocks from the international gathering.
The emergency response began after an NYPD canine detected something inside a black suitcase left on the sidewalk near East 43rd Street and Third Avenue, approximately two avenues from United Nations headquarters.
The suitcase was discovered shortly before 3 p.m. near the Chrysler Building, placing it inside the heavily secured section of Manhattan surrounding the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
The NYPD Emergency Service Unit blocked traffic and established a perimeter while the department’s bomb squad responded to examine the suitcase and determine whether it presented a danger.
Police closed 42nd, 43rd and 44th streets between Second Avenue and Lexington Avenue, producing additional disruption in a neighborhood already coping with extensive security restrictions, checkpoints and diplomatic motorcades.
One building in the area was evacuated as a precaution while officers kept pedestrians and vehicles away from the scene during the investigation.
Approximately 90 minutes after the suitcase was reported, police announced that the item had been examined, cleared and determined not to be suspicious.
No injuries were reported, and authorities did not immediately announce any arrest or identify the person who left the suitcase on the sidewalk.
The security scare unfolded shortly after President Donald Trump delivered a high-stakes address before the General Assembly, where Iran, American military power and several international conflicts dominated his remarks.
Trump defended his administration’s military campaign against Iran and argued that American action had prevented Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, while leaving open the possibility of reaching a negotiated settlement.
“I have a big decision to make,” Trump told the assembled leaders as he described the choice between an agreement allowing Iran to rebuild its country and further military action against the Islamic Republic.
Trump warned that he could “annihilate the Islamic Republic” if negotiations failed, while calling upon Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and return to the negotiating table.
The president also urged other countries to support the complete economic isolation of Iran, arguing that international pressure could force Tehran toward an agreement and help relieve pressure on global energy markets.
Trump used the address to highlight a strategic security agreement with Denmark and Greenland that would expand the American presence in the Arctic and prevent hostile foreign powers from gaining a stronger foothold in the region.
He also praised American technological development, rejected attempts to impose sweeping international restrictions on artificial intelligence and suggested the rapidly advancing technology should instead be called “super intelligence.”
Trump’s UN visit included meetings with foreign leaders as his administration confronted the Iran conflict, the Russia-Ukraine war, rising energy prices and growing competition with China.
Nearly 200 countries were expected to participate in the General Assembly, prompting the NYPD to coordinate its security operation with the Secret Service, FBI, State Department Diplomatic Security Service and United Nations police.
Officials said before the gathering that no specific credible threat had been identified, but hundreds of motorcades, visiting dignitaries and diplomatic events required an expansive security presence throughout Manhattan, NBC 4 reported.

The abandoned suitcase ultimately presented no danger, but its discovery demonstrated how quickly an ordinary unattended item could trigger a major police response near the United Nations during Trump’s appearance and an exceptionally tense gathering of world leaders.
