The prediction made by Senator Ted Cruz was that two of the most prominent progressive figures in the Democratic Party could potentially reshape the leadership of the party prior to the election in 2028.
Last week, the Texas Republican made his prediction in a social media post that caused a lot of people to take notice.
He asserted that Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a Democrat from New York, is considering a run for the presidency, and that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has the potential to eventually succeed Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, also a Democrat from New York.
The Texas Republican stated his belief that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez will run for president and that Zohran Mamdani will ultimately succeed Chuck Schumer in the United States Senate. Cruz made his statement in a video that was uploaded to X on Thursday. “I think AOC is going to run for president, and I think Zohran Mamdani is going to replace Chuck Schumer in the Senate,” Cruz said.
Additionally, he emphasized the importance of Republicans not disregarding the expanding influence of progressive Democrats.
“Some Republicans are cheering because the Democrats are crazy,” Cruz told reporters. “This country needs two parties that actually love America.”
Cruz made the argument that Schumer’s political future within the Democratic Party is limited in a separate post that he made on their website.
“Chuck Schumer has reached his demise. In New York, he will never again be able to win a primary election for the Democratic Party. It is not to him. “That is why I joke that he will be the first member of the AOC for President Campaign,” Cruz wrote. “He will be running for president.”
Despite the fact that the presidential election of 2028 is still more than two years away, there has been an increase in the amount of speculation regarding potential Democratic candidates. This is because early polling has begun to test possible potential primary matchups. There is not a single major Democratic candidate who has officially entered the race.
There have been multiple occasions when Ocasio-Cortez has declined to discuss the possibility of running for president. In response to recent polling, she stated that she is still concentrating on the midterm elections that will take place in 2026.
In an interview with The Independent, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez stated, “I think there are two things, the first of which is that, you know, polls are polls, and a horse race is a horse race.”
“I am, of course, I think, very deeply humbled and grateful to folks who participate and convey that confidence.”
She continued by saying, “I think my main focus is really genuinely just the midterms right now, and we have to make sure that we win this majority.”
The results of a poll conducted by the University of New Hampshire Survey Center and released on Wednesday showed that Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez has the support of 22% of likely Democratic primary voters. Pete Buttigieg, who had previously served as Secretary of Transportation, came in second with 21% of the vote, followed by Senator Mark Kelly with 9%, Governor Gavin Newsom of California with 8%, Senator Bernie Sanders with 6%, and former Vise President Kamala Harris with5%.
