Former South Carolina Republican Rep. Trey Gowdy remains a thorn in the side of Democrats. No one has done more to call out and destroy corrupt officials.
But things kicked up a notch this week when Gowdy dared Republicans to subpoena both former President Barack Obama and Democratic presidential candidate Joe Biden to testify before the Senate during the impeachment trial.
During an interview Thursday night on Fox News, Gowdy predicted there’s a good chance that Obama will be called to testify because he was aware of Joe Biden’s side, Hunter Biden, working for a shady gas company in Ukraine.
While Hunter was being paid $50,000 a month to work for the corrupt company, Joe Biden was Obama’s point-man who led Ukrainian policy — meaning he likely abused his power while his son served on one of the most corrupt and powerful companies in the region.
Gowdy wants Obama to testify about what he knew, when he knew it, and why he allowed it.
“Part of impeachment is setting a precedent for what’s going to happen in the future,” Gowdy said.
“So, if the vice president can make that assertion, then he is relevant as a witness, but so, too, is President Obama, because I would want to know whether or not he had the authority of the president at the time he made that pronouncement that there will be no loan guarantees unless the prosecutor is fired,” he added.
The incident Gowdy is referring to happened in 2018 when Biden bragged about “strong-arming Ukraine into firing a prosecutor by threatening to renege on a loan guarantee.”
Here’s what Biden told the Council on Foreign Relations at the time:
“I was supposed to announce that there was another billion-dollar loan guarantee, and I had gotten a commitment from Poroshenko and from Yatsenyuk that they would take action against the state prosecutor. And they didn’t.”
“I said, ‘Nah, I’m not going to — or, we’re not going to give you the billion dollars.’”
Gowdy said any good prosecutor would call Obama to testify.
Gowdy further explained that “if President Obama gave Joe Biden permission to condition loan guarantees on the firing of a prosecutor, then that makes both of them potentially relevant as witnesses.”
Several Republicans want to either hear from Hunter Biden or top figures like Obama and Joe Biden who knew what he was doing and did nothing about it.
Essentially, the allegations are that Hunter profited financially from his father’s time as vice president.
The details emerged as the Ukrainian government recently reopened an investigation into a company that once paid Hunter Biden roughly $50,000 a month.
That company, Burisma Holdings, is being probed by Ukraine’s top prosecutor.
Joe Biden allegedly pressured and tried to intimidate the Ukrainian government to remove the prosecutor from the case, and his plan actually worked.
As reported by The New York Times, Biden, who was still serving as the vice president, went to Kyiv in March 2016 and “threatened to withhold $1 billion in United States loan guarantees if Ukraine’s leaders did not dismiss the country’s top prosecutor [Yuriy Lutsenko], who had been accused of turning a blind eye to corruption in his own office and among the political elite.”
If Biden used his power as VP to pressure Ukraine into removing the prosecutor who was investigating a shady deal involving his son, that would be catastrophic and maybe even illegal.
If Democrats want to play this game, Republicans are more than ready to bust it wide open.
