Former President Donald Trump lit into President Joe Biden over his likely 2024 rival’s so-called immigration “reform” executive order issued this week that provides a sort of amnesty for millions of people who crossed into the U.S. illegally.
The Hill reported that Trump was addressing a rally in Racine, which is about 30 miles south of Milwaukee. It added that the Republican National Convention will meet next month in Milwaukee, four days after Trump faces sentencing for his hush money conviction.
He began his speech by discussing the criticism regarding his reported comments about Milwaukee being a “horrible city” during a closed-door meeting with House Republicans.
“You know, I love Milwaukee. I was the one that picked Milwaukee,” Trump told the crowd. Subsequent reporting at the time by lawmakers in the room, including several from Wisconsin, noted that Trump was specifically referring to crime in the city, not the city or its law-abiding people.
The Hill added:
Most of Trump’s remarks were focused on immigration, following an announcement from the Biden White House on executive action that would allow certain immigrants lacking documentation who are married to U.S. citizens to stay in the country and work legally.
“Crooked Joe is sending a message to the world that he rewards illegal entry, and that’s what’s happening,” Trump said. “Don’t kid yourself, the ones that are hurt the most, the black population, the Hispanic population,” he continued. “And you know who else is hurt badly? Unions.”
Majorities of each of those voting groups supported Biden in 2020. However, polls have indicated that Trump is gaining support among black and Hispanic voters, which could impact Biden in November.
Trump vowed to reverse Biden’s immigration measures if he is reelected. He also echoed the assertion made by many Republicans on Tuesday that Biden’s measure was a political maneuver to enroll new voters ahead of November’s election.
“The Biden betrayal is not going to stand. When I’m reelected, Joe Biden’s illegal amnesty plan will be ripped up and thrown out on the very first day that we’re back in office,” Trump said. “Because he’s just using that group. But he’s going to let everybody come in, because you know what they’re trying to do, they’re trying to sign these people up and register them.”
Biden announced while commemorating the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program at the White House with immigrant advocacy and Latino leaders.
Measures to make it easier for immigrants living in the country illegally—particularly DACA recipients who have earned degrees from U.S. colleges—to apply for work visas will go hand in hand with the expansion of the parole-in-place program. Beneficiaries won’t receive new privileges; instead, the new rules will streamline existing paths to regularize their migratory status, The Hill reported.
Since then, the DACA program has been bouncing around federal courtrooms and the Supreme Court after then-President Barack Obama implemented it by executive order despite repeatedly claiming he lacked the authority to do so.
“In 2016, the Supreme Court deadlocked 4-4 over an expanded DACA and a version of the program for parents of DACA recipients. In 2020, the high court ruled 5-4 that the Trump administration improperly ended DACA, allowing it to stay in place,” PBS reported.
Last year, “U.S. District Judge Andrew Hanen agreed with Texas and eight other states suing to stop the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, or DACA, program,” the outlet continued.
In 2022, the 5th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in New Orleans upheld Hanen’s previous ruling that declared DACA illegal. However, the case was sent back to him to review the changes made to the program by the Biden administration.
