Former President Donald Trump made a remarkable statement during an interview on Wednesday, telling Newsmax TV’s Greg Kelly that even Democrats and “liberals” want to be his running mate and part of his administration should he win in November.
“I get a kick out of watching the fake news media say, Nobody wants to work with him; nobody wants to be vice president; nobody wants to be secretary of state,” Trump said in an exclusive interview at his Mar-a-Lago estate in Palm Beach, Florida. “Everybody wants to be in these positions.
“There’s is not a person in politics that doesn’t want it, and that includes Democrats. If I wanted, I’d have a Democrat; I’d have a liberal; I’d have … anybody I want,” he added.
That said, Trump noted he won’t be picking a Democrat as his running mate or potential vice president.
“But we’re going to pick somebody that’s really good, really conservative; loves law and order, low taxes, low interest rates, borders,” Trump said. “We have to have the border. The border is killing our country.”
Trump says he has his VP pick “in his brain” but won’t announce who it is yet. He did say, however, that his pick is among the names that have been bandied about in the media.
“It’s the formal processes in my brain,” Trump said, suggesting he alone is making the pick. “I look at the same people that everybody else is looking at. We’ve had some really great people.
“I think we have really great people that want it. People have … expressed, ‘I would love to be vice president.’ Who wouldn’t? If you’re a politician, who wouldn’t want it?”
That said, Trump added that a couple of his GOP primary challengers did not make his list.
“I’d probably have a couple of people — that you may know very well — some people that I didn’t think behaved properly,” Trump continued. “Yeah, I think I’ve ruled some people out, but I’ve ruled a lot of people in.
“And we have a lot of great people in the Republican Party. And they’ll do a terrific job, I think. But certainly, I have people that I wouldn’t want as a vice president,” he added.
Trump went on to say that his selection, which isn’t likely to come for weeks, will not be some left-field surprise but among names that have already been mentioned.
“The press covers the people that are being thought about,” he said. “It’s unusual that you pick somebody totally out of that, and there are 15 people they talk about, and that list grows every day.”
One of them is South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem, who invited Trump to the state in 2020 to make a campaign speech at Mount Rushmore.
A more recent addition to the list is Sen. Katie Britt (R-Ala.), whom the GOP picked to give the party’s response to President Biden’s anger-filled State of the Union address.
“Senator Britt who is the new freshman senator from Alabama, and who some very smart people believe will be Trump’s vice presidential pick — she has her big audition night because she’s going to deliver the response to Biden,” former House Speaker Newt Gingrich said during a radio interview with WABC 770 AM-N.Y. on Sunday.
“It’ll be interesting to see if Britt rises to the occasion. If she does, it will be a major step up in her potentially being Trump’s vice presidential candidate,” he continued.

During her GOP primary race against U.S. Rep. Mo Brooks, Britt secured the endorsement of Trump midway through. Last month, Britt reciprocated by endorsing the former president’s candidacy for a return to the White House, stating that he is “the only candidate who can secure the border.”
