President Donald Trump is scheduled to meet with New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani at Gracie Mansion on Monday as the city hosts world leaders for the United Nations General Assembly.
The meeting will mark Trump’s first visit with Mamdani at the mayor’s official residence and the third face-to-face meeting between the two men since Mamdani won the 2025 mayoral election.
“The meeting will focus on issues affecting New York City and New Yorkers,” City Hall said in announcing the sit-down.
The White House has also confirmed the meeting. Mamdani spokeswoman Dora Pekec declined to provide additional details about the agenda or logistics.
Mamdani’s public schedule indicates the meeting is expected to begin around 4 p.m. and will be closed to the press.
Trump is in New York for a series of events surrounding the U.N. General Assembly and is scheduled to address the gathering on Tuesday.
The two New Yorkers have significant political differences but have maintained a working relationship since Mamdani’s election.
Trump and Mamdani first met at the White House in November 2025, shortly after Mamdani won the mayoral race. Despite a contentious campaign in which the two repeatedly criticized one another, their Oval Office meeting took on a notably cordial tone.
“We have one thing in common,” Trump said following that meeting. “We want this city of ours that we love to do very well.”
The pair met again at the White House in February, after Mamdani took office. That discussion included housing and federal immigration enforcement, according to reports at the time.
Mamdani advocated for federal support for housing development over Sunnyside Yard and raised the cases of pro-Palestinian demonstrators held in immigration detention.
Mamdani has said his administration intends to continue communicating with Trump when doing so could benefit New York City.
“When it comes to the president, we continue to have a conversation about how best to deliver for this city,” Mamdani said last week when asked whether another meeting was planned during the U.N. gathering.
“That is a conversation that has been done in person, it’s been done over the phone, and it will continue so long as either of us have the ability to deliver for the city,” he added.
The mayor has said previously that he and Trump communicate outside their formal meetings but has declined to disclose details about the frequency or substance of those conversations.
Their working relationship has not eliminated their political disagreements.
Trump has continued to criticize Mamdani and his democratic socialist politics, while Mamdani has challenged several Trump administration policies. Most recently, Mamdani joined other mayors in litigation challenging federal changes affecting how immigrants can obtain permanent legal residency.
Monday’s meeting also comes during an unusually busy week for New York City.
Nearly 200 countries are expected to be represented during the U.N. General Assembly, with the high-level general debate beginning Tuesday and continuing through Sept. 28. The gathering traditionally brings heightened security, street closures and traffic disruptions across Manhattan.
Trump is expected to hold a series of meetings with foreign leaders during his stay in New York, with international conflicts and other foreign-policy issues expected to dominate much of his U.N. schedule.
Mamdani has also been meeting with international officials. Over the weekend, he welcomed mayors from around the world for the Urban 20 Summit, including leaders from Europe, Africa, Latin America and Asia.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s expected appearance at the United Nations later in the week could add another politically sensitive issue to the proceedings.
Mamdani has been a persistent critic of the Israeli government, although he said recently that he does not plan to participate in demonstrations surrounding Netanyahu’s visit.
For Trump and Mamdani, however, Monday’s discussion is officially being framed around New York.
Despite their continuing ideological and policy differences, both have indicated since their first Oval Office meeting that they are willing to maintain direct communication on housing, affordability and other issues affecting the nation’s largest city.
